Manny Pacquiao will fight March 13 at Cowboys Stadium, but not against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said Sunday he has finalized a deal to match Pacquiao against Joshua Clottey in a welterweight bout at the new US$1.2-billion stadium. Arum moved swiftly to land a lucrative fight for his Filipino star after his contentious negotiations for a megafight with Mayweather fell apart in a prolonged dispute over blood testing.

Arum was in Texas over the weekend to wrap up details for the pay-per-view fight, which will be the first boxing match in the stadium. Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels said the arena will be configured to seat 50,000 fans for the fight, but the capacity could be raised or lowered.

“This stadium has blown me away,” Arum told The Associated Press. “It is the most magnificent facility I’ve ever seen.”

Arum took in the Dallas Cowboys’ playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night, sitting just two seats from former U.S. President George W. Bush. Arum said Bush had the same reaction he’s heard repeatedly since negotiations with Mayweather bogged down

“Too bad you didn’t get Mayweather, but what difference does it make?” Arum said Bush told him. “Everybody just wants see Pacquiao anyway.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reportedly offered a $25-million site fee for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, which fell apart over Mayweather’s insistence on stringent drug testing and Pacquiao’s reluctance to agree. The sides went into mediation to resolve the dispute, but a compromise couldn’t be reached.

And though Arum is a longtime New York Giants season ticket-holder, he found common ground with Jones for another major event in the opulent new stadium.

“This is a competitive fight, as competitive as the Cotto fight going in,” Arum said. “We got a tremendous deal at the site.

“It’s a big event, and I think we’ll do unbelievable.”

Although Mayweather’s representatives still were holding out hope the Pacquiao fight could be salvaged, Mayweather also is expected to fight March 13 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, which would have been the site of his bout with Pacquiao. Paulie Malignaggi has been the most popular contender for that fight.

Although Clottey has no fraction of Mayweather’s fame, he’s a worthy welterweight opponent for Pacquiao, widely considered the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The hard-hitting Clottey (35-3, 20 KOs), a native of Ghana who lives in New York, is coming off a split-decision loss to Miguel Cotto last June, a fight that some felt Clottey won.

Cotto went on to take a thrashing from Pacquiao in November, losing when the fight was stopped in the final round.

The bout was slated for March 13 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, but Top Rank said it couldn’t reach an agreement with Golden Boy Promotions, which represented Mayweather in the negotiations, after nine hours of mediation Tuesday and more discussions Wednesday.

Although neither side was allowed to publicly discuss the specifics of their dispute, Mayweather apparently balked at a hard-fought compromise in the testing issues first raised by the former welterweight champion.

“I knew this was going to happen,” said a weary Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter. “You had to play it out.”

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer and Mayweather adviser Leonard Ellerbe didn’t immediately return phone messages.

The promoters went into the lengthy mediation Tuesday to resolve their differences over drug testing for the fight. Both sides claimed every other detail for the fight had been decided, but Mayweather had demanded random blood testing in addition to unlimited urine testing, with Pacquiao balking at the stringent requests.

The fighters’ representatives apparently thought they had a compromise after the mediation. The promoters were widely expected to formally announce the bout Wednesday — but subsequent discussions with Mayweather during the day led Top Rank to declare the fight cancelled.

Arum was left fuming by Mayweather, who fought for Top Rank for several years.

“I’ve been saying this for years: He’s a psychological coward who doesn’t want to fight anybody who has a chance of beating him,” Arum said. “He walked away from a rematch with Oscar (De La Hoya) that would have paid him a fortune because De La Hoya held him close in the first fight (in May 2007).”

After stellar pay-per-view numbers from their previous fights, both Pacquiao and Mayweather likely stood to make more than US$25 million from the welterweight bout. Mayweather returned to the ring after a 21-month absence in September with a victory over Juan Manuel Marquez, while Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) pounded Miguel Cotto in November for his 13th straight victory since 2005.

What has began as a practical joke would have been funnier if Arenas brings a toy gun instead of unloaded hand gun.

Arenas could face a lengthy suspension and risk getting his six years US$111 million deal voided by the Wizards by invoking the moral clause in a standard NBA contract.

Arenas already admitted bringing unloaded firearms to the arena to keep it away from his kids. Keeping them in gun container.

According to Yahoo! Sports, he took them out of the container before a Dec. 21 practice and laid the guns on a chair, then told Crittenton to choose one and make good on a threat that stemmed from a card game on a late-night flight from Phoenix back to Washington two days earlier.

As the game got more expensive, Crittenton joked about what could happen to people who didn’t honour their debts. Arenas has has a well-deserved reputation as a prankster and laying out the guns apparently was his way of trying to diffuse any lingering tension between the two.

Instead, the gesture enraged Crittenton. According to a New York Post report, Arenas and Crittenton wound up drawing guns on each other.

I guess this time Arenas won’t be able to laugh this off.

The biggest and most lucrative fight of the century has been derailed with the drug testing issue and with the lawsuit that the Filipino Boxing champ files against the Mayweather’s (Floyd Sr, Jr, and Roger) and Golden Boy Promotion everyone is almost certain that this fight will never happen. But with Top Rank chief Bob Arum saying “something could be bubbling” and Mayweather promotions CEO Leonard Allerbe hopeful of giving “the biggest fight in history … to the fans.” We might see the fight after all.

Boxing analyst and expert is saying that there are too much money involve for this fight not to push through. We should all remember that boxing is a money business and with the estimated money that this fight could earn there is no way that this fight won’t happen, if it doesn’t happen at March 13 it will happen in the near future.

According to Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach the Filipino boxing champion will arrive in California next to start training for his next bout. Boxing website Fighthype.com reported Saturday.

Pacquiao is set to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13 but this fight won’t likely happen anytime soon because of Mayweather Jr. insistent of an Olympic style drug testing to conducted by the US anti doping agency which Mayweather later drop but still insist on a random drug testing. But the proposed fight received another blow when Pacquiao sued Mayweather—along with the American’s father Floyd Sr., his uncle Roger and Golden Boy Promotions for accusing him of using performance -enhancing drugs—in a federal court in Las Vegas.

And in the event that the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather didn’t go through Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum is looking at another fighter to replace Mayweather. It’s either the newly crowned WBA junior middleweight Yuri Foreman or the Italian fighter Paul Malignaggi.

But trainer Freddie Roach would rather see a third fight with the Mexican icon Juan Manuel Marquez.

The suit filed in federal court in Las Vegas further complicates efforts to reach an agreement for a proposed March 13 fight between the two boxers. The fight has been stalled by demands by the Mayweather camp that both fighters submit to random blood and urine tests leading up to the bout.

Pacquiao claimed in the suit that he has never tested positive for any performance-enhancing drugs, but that Mayweather, his father and uncle, Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions chief Richard Schaefer embarked on a campaign to make people think he used drugs.

“The truth did not stop Mayweather and the others,” the suit contends. “That is because they are motivated by ill will, spite, malice, revenge and envy.”

Pacquiao’s lawyer, Dan Petrocelli, said his client could be out millions of dollars if boxing fans believe he used steroids or human growth hormone to win titles in seven weight classes.

“The damage to his reputation and lost business opportunities could be in the tens of millions of dollars,” Petrocelli said.

The suit cites various interviews done by the defendants in which they intimated that Pacquiao’s strength and power did not all come naturally. Among the interviews cited was an October radio interview in which Mayweather Jr. allegedly said Pacquiao’s physique was different “cause we know the Philippines got the best enhancing drugs.”

Schaefer said the suit came as no surprise since Pacquiao had threatened it earlier in the week. He said his lawyers would respond to it, even as talks continue for the fight.

“I’m hearing these talks are being productive,” Schaefer said. “Hopefully we will know something in the next couple of days.”

Mayweather and Pacquiao had been expected to meet in what promises to be the richest fight ever after they reached agreement over everything from the size of their purses to the make of their gloves for the welterweight megafight. But a demand by Mayweather’s camp for both fighters to be subjected to Olympic-style blood testing has stood in the way of a final agreement for the bout.

Talks over the last few days have centred on finding agreement on a date to stop blood testing before the fight, since Pacquiao believes that giving blood may weaken him, at least psychologically.

The lawsuit may not stand in the way of an agreement, but it adds to the increasing rancour between the two camps. In the suit, Pacquiao claims that comments by Mayweather, his father, Floyd Sr., and trainer, Roger Mayweather, were part of a defamation campaign against him.

“Mayweather Jr. and the others set out on a course designed to destroy Pacquiao’s career, reputation, honour and legacy and jeopardize his ability to earn the highest levels of compensation,” the suit contends.

Bryant came through with 17 points in the fourth quarter, clinching his seventh 40-point game of the season on two free throws with 4:04 left. He has 103 40-point games in his career, third-most in NBA history.

Corey Maggette scored 25 points and Monta Ellis added 22 for the Warriors, who beat Phoenix and Boston in the previous three days during the best stretch of another rough start to a season.

Golden State shot superbly and ran its uptempo offence well, but had nobody who could guard Bryant in the Warriors’ seventh straight loss to the Lakers. The Warriors haven’t won three straight games yet this season.

The Lakers still have the NBA’s best record (25-6) despite two 15-point losses in the previous three days, including their 102-87 Christmas flop against Cleveland. They also played their third straight game without starting forward Ron Artest, who gave himself a concussion and a deep cut on his left elbow when he tripped and fell at his home on Christmas.

In their first home game since their fans littered the court with foam hands in response to the Lakers’ gripes about the officiating, Bryant and Lamar Odom both got technical fouls for arguing calls in the final 4:16. Los Angeles’ complaining helped the Warriors keep within three points down the stretch until Bryant followed up Ronny Turiaf’s two missed free throws with two foul shots of his own with 1:05 to play.

C.J. Watson scored 14 points while hitting four three-pointers for the Warriors, who went 14 for 22 in the first quarter while opening with a clear burst of energy, perhaps still rolling from their impressive 103-99 win over the Celtics.

Pushing the tempo and finding Maggette for open shots, the Warriors scored 29 points the first 8:03 to take an 11-point lead that grew to 15 in the second quarter. Los Angeles rallied after halftime and took the lead midway through the period, but the Warriors hung around with scoring from Maggette and Ellis, whose layup in traffic evened it at 104 with 5:24 to play.
